Festive Lantern Parade makes a welcome return to Newport City Centre!

This Festive Season on Thursday 26th November, Malarky Arts are back with their Lantern Parade. The event sponsored by Newport’s Urban Regeneration Company, Newport Unlimited; hopes to consist of 250+ local school children from areas such as Bettws, Maindee, Pill & St. Woolos, just to name a few.

The parade will start at The Riverfront Theatre at 5.30pm; make its way through the heart of the City Centre before congregating in John Frost Square around 6.30pm* for a small staged music event involving local choirs and dance acts including Cascapella, Newport Gospel Choir, Cor Casnewydd, GLD school of Dance & Newport Devils. A giant magical star will be leading the way; with the samba band ‘Batatan’; the children will be joined by a wintry, colourful band of followers including a variety of mythical creatures - yeti, ice queen and holly & oak kings doing ‘battle’!

Malarky Arts have been busily working with local schools to provide workshops; giving children the opportunity to learn new skills of making the lanterns; which they will later use in the parade.

Newport Unlimited Urban Regeneration Company is proud to back this years Christmas events to mark the beginning of the festive period. The Interim Chief Executive Gareth Beer said “Newport Unlimited has sponsored the Christmas lights and is proud to be sole sponsor of the Lantern Parade. On the eve of the Newport 2010 Festival and the Ryder Cup year we are helping make the Christmas celebrations even more special for residents and visitors”

Newport Unlimited is pushing forward the £2bn regeneration programme and is changing the city for the people and businesses of Newport, with many projects currently underway such as the University campus, the station concourse and the start of the first sustainable homes development for the city.

If you want to get involved with the Lantern Parade, there’s still time and there will be lots of lanterns available!
