Yell, the international directories business, has announced plans for a new multi million pound call centre in the city of Newport, to expand its award winning Yellow Pages 118 24 7 service. Yell’s investment, which could see the creation of more than 250 jobs phased over the next four years, has received grant aid from the Welsh Assembly Government, and support from the Assembly’s International Business Wales team. The FTSE 100 business will be the first company to move into Usk House, a new £3.5 million office development on the 4.6 acre George Street site in
Newport , which has been specifically earmarked as a strategic site to attract major new business to the city centre.

Calls are expected to be handled on site as early as April. The George Street site has been set aside as a major new business district, with the area also set to house the 10,000 sq ft regional headquarters for the Red Cross as well as a 32,000 sq ft Magistrates Court.
The district will also be home to one of the first premises delivered as part of the Welsh Investment Strategic Partnership (WISP). Work started on the 50,000 sq ft office building in November and is expected to be complete by the end of 2007. George Street is just one of the 50 projects that urban regeneration company, Newport Unlimited, will be rolling out ahead of the 2010 Ryder Cup in a multi-million pound regeneration programme to regenerate the city into a thriving place in which to live, work and play. John Burrows, chief executive of Newport Unlimited, said: “Usk House offers top quality, high spec office accommodation and Yell’s signing can only be another boost to growing confidence that’s spreading across
Newport . “The George Street business district has pulled in strong investment from some major players, bringing hundreds of new jobs right to the heart of the city.
Newport is on track to becoming a thriving place to do business.”

Yellow Pages 118 24 7 remains the only 118 service that offers detailed information on local businesses. For example, householders who lock themselves out of a car at night can obtain details of a nearby locksmith that takes credit cards, offers a 24 hour emergency call out and even specialises in the particular make of car involved.
