From November 20, some Newportbuses will be using an alternative city centre route.
Buses will be travelling down Stow Hill and passing through Westgate Square and along Skinner Street during the day. This will become a permanent feature of the regenerated City Centre.
Councillor Ken Critchley, cabinet member for engineering and transport, said: “The City Centre is going through major changes at the moment – all with the aim of making it a better and more attractive for shoppers and visitors.
“Some congestion is inevitable, but we hope that these steps will help public transport to operate timely and efficiently and provide the best possible service to our residents.”
Previously, bollards prevented vehicles travelling in this area between the hours of 11am and 5pm. Only buses and emergency vehicles will now be allowed to use this route between these hours.
Councillor Critchley added: “New signs will be put up in Westgate Square to make pedestrians aware of potential traffic, but we are urging residents and visitors to please make sure they take extra care when passing through this part of the City Centre.”
An official bus stop will be in place on Stow Hill near KFC.
