Modus investigate mural

Modus is organising further investigations into the chartist mural, in Newport city centre, before finalising the decision to relocate the mosaic. The developers will be removing parts of the artwork to do further tests to determine whether it will be possible to re-locate it.

The Chartist Mural will either be relocated or replaced by Modus, who understand the importance of the commemorative mosaic to the Newport community. The public will be fully involved in every step of the progress, and will be asked to contribute their thoughts should a new piece of artwork need to be created.

Modus are creating a development that will completely revitalise the city. The scheme will provide 475,000 sq ft of retail as well as 250 city style apartments, 47,000 sq ft multi screen cinemas, public space and a cafes and restaurants quarter

Friars Walk will be anchored by a 105,000 sq. ft. Debenhams.

The build is due to start on site i spring 2008 and the anticipated completion date is late 2009.

latest news- the most recent suggestion has now been that the mural is created from new, using the allocated public art money available for the Modus schemes. The original designs are held on paper and can be recreated.
