Preferred hotel developer announced for Old Town Dock
Plans to transform the Old Town Dock area of Newport’s city centre are one step closer with the appointment of the preferred developer for a £10m hotel scheme.
Urban regeneration company, Newport Unlimited, a partnership between Newport City Council and the Welsh Assembly Government, has chosen Alfred McAlpine’s joint venture with New World Leisure as its preferred development partner.
The Alfred McAlpine, New World Leisure joint venture has secured a franchise to develop and operate a Ramada Encore hotel at Old Town Dock. |

The 1.52 acre site will contain an upper budget sector hotel with 124 bedrooms, 2,000 sq ft of meeting and conference facilities, a bar and restaurant as well as a visitor car park.
John Burrows, chief executive of Newport Unlimited said, ''The regeneration of Old Town Dock has taken a major step forward with the appointment of the preferred hotel developer.''
''We were very impressed by the plans put forward by Alfred McAlpine and by their experienced team for the project. Selecting such a well-established and trusted hotel brand will also bring more visitors to the city centre, helping Newport to become an energetic place to live, work and play.''

The hotel site is one of several regeneration schemes at Old Town Dock in the city of Newport. Westmark Limited has been appointed to create the first phase of 154 one and two-bed residential units in a development worth £25 million on a two acre site.
Old Town Dock will also be home to a £50 million Redrow development, Alexandra Gate, which will be located on the former Black Clawson site. The scheme will contain 215 one and two-bedroom apartments and 98 three and four-bedroom town houses. The first phase of homes are expected to be ready to move into by the end of 2007.
John Burrows continued, ''It is our vision to create a sustainable city with a thriving city centre. As well as the Ramada Encore hotel, the Old Town Dock area will offer 1,500 new flats and apartments, student accommodation, a business district, and new leisure space.''
