Old Green proposals - find out more
A public exhibition on the plans for the Old Green Roundabout and slip road is being held upstairs in the Indoor Market on Friday 6 July and Saturday 7 July.
It is your chance to find out more about the proposals, what benefits they could bring and is also your chance to ask questions and leave comments.
The council has proposed an experimental traffic order which would see the closure of the northbound slip road which heads along the Kingsway, past the Market and up to the Old Green Roundabout.
The vision to open up the Market building and area around it - currently obscured by the slip road - is part of the City Centre Masterplan.
A number of other road improvements are proposed to complement the closure of the slip road. These include • modifications to the proposed traffic signals at Old Green Roundabout • opening up of Corn Street / Skinner Street junction to allow direct access to Kingsway both north and south • improvements to Harlequin Roundabout to introduce additional traffic signals and to widen Queen’s Hill.

A large proportion of the traffic which currently uses the slip road originates from Corn Street, Upper Dock Street, and Skinner Street. Some of this traffic uses Old Green Roundabout to make the U-turn to Kingsway south and to travel north via Harlequin Roundabout. This is extremely local access traffic which will mainly be removed or catered for by the changes in the access arrangements to Upper Dock Street as part of the Modus redevelopment proposals and the new junction with Kingsway.
Other motorists using the slip road are either intending to head over Town Bridge to the east of the city, or travel along the Queensway past the Cambrian Centre and railway station. Traffic studies suggest that if the slip road was closed motorists would use a large number of alternative routes across the city. Some of the traffic travelling over Town Bridge would use George Street Bridge instead, which carries a reduced amount of traffic since the SDR opened. Some of the Queensway traffic would be diverted through the Harlequin Roundabout.
Buses, which currently use the slip road, will be able to access Old Green Roundabout via Market Square, where additional bus stands have been provided. |
