Ryder Cup Presentation

Newport residents are invited to come along and hear more about the city’s planning for the 2010 Ryder Cup at a special meeting in December.

Members will receive a presentation from the chairman of Ryder Cup Wales, Rob Holt who will update the council on preparations for the tournament which is taking place at the Celtic Manor in 2010 but members of the public are also welcome to come along.

Following Ireland’s memorable tournament in 2006, Newport will be the next European host of the event which is broadcast to a global audience of billions.

Tens of thousands of visitors from across the world will descend on Newport for the tournament, with Newport the next European hosts of the tournament

A special meeting of the overview and scrutiny forum for development and employment will take place at the Civic Centre on Tuesday 4 December at 2:30pm.

The meeting will include updates from the council’s managing director Chris Freegard on how the major regeneration projects in the city are progressing.

Since Newport was announced as the host of the 2010 Ryder Cup the city has benefited from a huge amount of interest from the private sector with schemes valued at more than half a billion pounds proposed over the next few years.

Many of the major regeneration projects underway at the moment are intended to be completed ahead of the tournament.

Work has already started on a range of infrastructure works on the roads around the Celtic Manor which will have knock-on benefits for residents living in the area.

Other major schemes include

• the Friars Walk development which will include a new hotel, shopping galleria, Debenhams department store and brand new state of the art bus station
• revamped train station with more services to and from Newport, new platform, and boulevarded Queensway providing a more pedestrian friendly environment for people getting off trains
• the City Spires development on the site of the existing Cambrian Centre, including a 100 metre residential tower.
